Start with length × width × thickness
A sheet or plate needs three dimensions. Length and width describe the flat face; thickness is measured through the material. Record the units for all three and keep the required thickness separate from the sheet format.
The catalogue shows millimetres with familiar foot formats where applicable. For example, the 8 ft × 4 ft format is listed with nominal 2438 × 1219 mm dimensions. Treat the listed format as nominal, not a promise of an exact cutting tolerance.
“Sheet” and “plate” are useful product names, but a name alone does not specify thickness. Order by the numeric thickness in the relevant product table rather than relying on a universal sheet/plate cutoff.
Avoid gauge and patterned-plate ambiguity
Gauge numbers depend on the gauge system and material. A gauge number without that context is not an unambiguous millimetre thickness. Use the listed thickness in mm, or ask sales to confirm the conversion before ordering.
For chequered plate, specify whether your thickness requirement is the base metal or an overall measurement including the raised pattern. For coated sheets, make clear any coating requirement rather than assuming a thickness label certifies coating mass.
Weight is a reference, not a substitute for dimensions
Check whether a column states weight per sheet, per metre or per piece. The same number with a different basis means a different quantity. Reference weights depend on dimensions and material and should not be transferred between mild steel, stainless steel and aluminium.
When estimating a plain rectangular plate, mass = length × width × thickness × density, using consistent units. A correct estimate still depends on the material density, tolerances and actual dimensions; it is not a certified supplied weight.
For cut pieces, give the finished sizes, number of pieces, any drawing and required tolerances. Do not assume that the area of a full sheet can all become finished parts: cutting allowance and layout affect yield. Sales will confirm whether cutting can be arranged.

A quick selection check
- Material and grade, length × width, thickness in mm, and required finish.
- Number of full sheets or a separate cut list with finished sizes, quantities and tolerances.
- For patterned or coated products, clarify the thickness basis and any coating requirement.
