Read the section family before the size
IPE, IPE AA, universal beams and universal columns are separate section families in the catalogue. Do not treat a similar-looking height or width as proof of interchangeability.
The nominal size h × b is a designation. Actual depth h is the overall depth, flange width b is the width across a flange, web thickness tw is the thickness of the central web, and flange thickness tf is the flange thickness. Use the diagram and the actual dimension columns for clearances.
Sections with the same nominal depth and width may have different mass per metre and different actual dimensions. The two universal-beam rows below illustrate why “203 × 133 beam” alone is not enough to identify a section.
Keep kg/m separate from weight per length
Mass in kg/m describes one metre of section, not the whole beam. Nominal weight for a length is mass per metre multiplied by length in metres. A 12 m reference-weight column is not proof that every order will be supplied at that length.
Use published mass per metre for comparing section sizes. Any nominal weight is an estimate for the stated length, not a certified weighbridge result. Confirm supply length, cutting requirements and handling arrangements with sales.
A size table is not a load-capacity table
A suitable beam depends on loads, span, supports, restraint, steel grade, connections, deflection limits and the applicable design rules. Section depth or kg/m alone cannot establish a safe span or load.
Ask a qualified structural engineer to specify the section and material for structural work. Send the exact designation and drawing for a quotation; do not select a lighter substitute simply because its nominal height matches.

A quick selection check
- Exact section family, nominal designation and mass per metre; include a drawing where available.
- Required steel grade or standard, lengths and number of pieces.
- Any cutting, drilling or finish requirements and delivery/handling information; have substitutions approved by your engineer.
